Automated Vehicles - Challenges and Opportunities for Road Operators and Road Authorities

This article is a presentation of the report recently published by PIARC Task Force B.2 Automated Vehicles and available on PIARC Website.

In the last few years, vehicles with different levels of automation have been being tested all over the world. The automated vehicles will increasingly need to rely on a digital twin of the infrastructure, comprising data transmitted either through connectivity or through digital maps.

This scenario implies challenges that have to be faced by road authorities and operators to get the best performance of the road system. Thus, the task force TF B.2 was created within PIARC to study the impact of these vehicles from road authorities and operators point of view. The team has been integrated by members from Austria, South Africa, Italy, China, United Kingdom, Australia, Czech Republic, France, Japan, Spain, South Korea, Canada and Sweden.
